There is also another part of the splitter that can be a life saver. A small set of fingers or anti kickback dogs that hang from the splitter towards the surface of the table.
The fingers are suspended from the splitter and float over the material as it passes towards the end of the table. The fingers have a few knotches on the underside and are designed to dig into the material in the event that the material binds and wants to be thrown back toward the operator.
The hope is that the fingers will dig into the material and prevent the kickback from happening. I have tested this exact process on numerous table saws and it is very effective.
It should be noted that there are times when the fingers may not be as effective. An example of this would be when you may be cutting melamine type products. The surface of the melamine is smooth and fairly dense and the fingers will likely not dig in to the material. This is a case where other options are available as a safety device or extra precaution should be taken.
The other missing piece of this safety equipment is of course the guard that covers the saw blade itself.
