Tablesaw Guard

The overhead guard

The guard that covers the saw blade is likely the one safety feature that creates the most discussion. The discussion is often of the negative typetablesaw blade guard

Why is this? As woodworkers we usually want to see exactly what we are cutting and therefore use the excuse that the guard reduces the visibility factor. I understand this approach but if the guard is removed it does compromise the safety aspect. I have seen and used many guards and do have my own personal preferences. It is true that many of the clear plastic guards eventually get scratched and significantly reduce the operators visibility. That is one of the main reasons they are removed and left in the corner to collect dust.  Some times they just seem to get in the way and are inconvenient to attach or we just say , its just one or two cuts, Iwill put it on next time. Unfortunatelyy the next time may be the time that an accident occurs. My humor line for that is, thats not the meaning of a second hand store. You just cant get another set of fingers or hands over the counter. Be safe, use common sense, take the time and use the safety devices to protect you and others. Cheers.
