If you need to go out and purchase tools then some of the best advice I can give you is to buy the best quality tool that you can afford at the time, and be practical with your selection.
What is the main purpose of the tool(s) you will be needing.
If it is a tool that is only going to be used once or twice you may be further ahead to rent or borrow that specific tool.
Smaller hand and portable tools are always useful on an ongoing basis and are certainly convenient to have around the house, cottage, or shop. Each individual really needs to make their own decisions here as some will use them on a continuous basis while others will only use them a few times a year.
When purchasing larger tools such as table saws, planers, jointers and such, the process requires a little extra thought. A quality table saw is a pleasure to use and if maintained can easily last a lifetime. The table saw is such a versatile tool that it may be the major purchase that is the most important. With the larger machines you need to consider your short term as well as long term goals and what type of projects you plan on building. You do not want to sell yourself short on a machine such as this.
- Does it need to be portable
- Can it be positioned in a main place
- What amount of work space do I have available
- Will it need a special switch or lock out type device if there are young kids around who should not be using a saw unsupervised.
- Will it need to have an extendable table or full sheets of material
This list could go on forever so my main point is, spend some time planning so when you make the purchase it will be the right choice for you.
