Where do you start, it all depends on what you already know or think you know. I have been a woodworker/builder for the past 32 years and learn something new each time I build or help others build projects. All the reading in the world doesn’t make you an expert woodworker. It does however let you become familiar with a project or information that will be useful as you work on a project.
Creating or finding a good set of plans is essential. The are a gazillion resources from books to magazines, and videos to dvds that are widely available for a minimal cost. Your local library may be a good place to start for no cost plans and ideas.
Once you have choosen a plan then it is time to get serious about building the project you have in mind. Finding the proper materials and hardware for a basic project is not usually to difficult as local lumber stores typically carry a wide range of products. Special projects may take some extra time in finding a supplier for your needs.
Now that a decision has been made its time to get down to the most enjoyable part, building the project. Now is the time that the safety rules come into play. Knowing the rules is one thing, actually applying them is another. Choose to do it safely the first time, or, its never too late to start if you have been slipping in the safety department. Knowing how to use a tool or tools properly will let you get the most out of their intended use.
